What is DBT for Adults?
DBT for Adults is the original form of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the late 1980s. It combines acceptance-based and change-based strategies to help adults manage intense emotions, reduce self-destructive behaviors, and build lives that feel worth living.
DBT was originally developed to treat adults with borderline personality disorder and chronic suicidality. Decades of research have since demonstrated its effectiveness for a much broader range of concerns, including trauma, substance use, chronic depression, eating disorders, and relationship difficulties.
At its heart, DBT holds that two seemingly opposite ideas can be true at the same time: you are doing the best you can and you can learn to do better with new skills.

IMPACT's Approach
to DBT for Adults
At IMPACT, we deliver DBT for adults through individual therapy, tailored to the specific needs and goals of each client. Rather than requiring participation in a structured program, our clinicians integrate DBT skills into ongoing individual work, allowing clients to move at their own pace and blend DBT with other approaches when clinically appropriate.
Our therapists are trained in the full range of DBT skills and can support clients through crisis stabilization, longer-term skill building, and integration of DBT with trauma-focused work, attachment-based therapy, or psychodynamic approaches.
What DBT for Adults at IMPACT Looks Like:
Weekly individual therapy focused on identifying key areas of struggle and applying relevant DBT skills.
Skills integrated into real life: Sessions focus on skills you can actually use at work, in relationships, and in daily stressors.
Flexible integration: DBT can be blended with trauma work, attachment-based approaches, or psychodynamic exploration.
Support for complex presentations: Our clinicians work with clients who have layered histories of trauma, dysregulation, and relational difficulty.
