What is RO-DBT?
Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) is an evidence-based treatment developed by Dr. Thomas R. Lynch for people whose difficulties stem from overcontrol, a pattern of excessive self-restraint, perfectionism, and emotional inhibition.
While standard DBT was developed for people who struggle with undercontrol, impulsivity, emotional reactivity, and behaviors that appear disruptive, RO-DBT addresses the opposite end of the spectrum. People with overcontrolled coping styles are often serious, hardworking, high-achieving, and quietly suffering. They set high standards for themselves, follow rules carefully, and often sacrifice their own needs to meet others' expectations. Yet inside, they may feel disconnected, lonely, and unsure how to form close bonds.
RO-DBT is built around three core themes: openness, flexibility, and social connectedness.
KEY BENEFITS
Who Can Benefit From RO-DBT?
RO-DBT was developed for and has research support with clients experiencing:
Chronic or treatment-resistant depression
Anorexia nervosa and restrictive eating disorders
Obsessive-compulsive personality traits (perfectionism, rigidity)
Autism spectrum presentations in adults
Chronic emotional loneliness or isolation
Perfectionism and self-imposed high standards
Difficulty with vulnerability and self-disclosure
Feeling "clueless" about connection despite outward success
Note: OCPD is not the same as OCD. OCPD refers to a personality style organized around perfectionism, orderliness, and control.
IMPACT's Approach to RO-DBT
At IMPACT, RO-DBT is delivered through individual therapy, allowing us to tailor the work to each client's specific presentation and goals. Because overcontrolled clients often experience treatment as another arena for performance and compliance, our clinicians pay careful attention to therapeutic stance, encouraging genuine self-doubt, playful experimentation, and permission to be imperfect within the therapy relationship itself.
RO-DBT Addresses What Traditional Therapy Sometimes Misses:
Social signaling: How your body language, facial expressions, and tone communicate to others, often outside your awareness.
Radical openness: A willingness to question your convictions and try new experiences, even when they feel uncomfortable.
Healthy self-doubt: The capacity to consider that you might not know what you don't know.
Genuine self-disclosure: Sharing your inner experience in ways that invite closeness rather than distance.
Playfulness: Loosening rigid rule-following in favor of spontaneity and connection.
Is RO-DBT Effective?
The research base for RO-DBT is growing. Randomized trials and systematic reviews support its effectiveness for adults with chronic depression, adults and adolescents with anorexia nervosa, adults with autism spectrum presentations, and clients with obsessive-compulsive personality traits.
Because RO-DBT specifically targets difficulties that other treatments often miss, emotional loneliness, perfectionism, and social disconnection despite outward competence, it can be particularly meaningful for clients who have tried other therapies without lasting relief.
How RO-DBT Can Help You
Reduced emotional loneliness and isolation
Greater flexibility in thinking and behavior
Stronger, more genuine social connections
Increased capacity for playfulness and spontaneity
Relief from perfectionism and rigid self-standards
New skills for expressing emotion and inviting closeness
What Makes RO-DBT Different From Standard DBT?
While RO-DBT and standard DBT share common roots, they target different populations and emphasize different skills:
Target population
RO-DBT is designed for overcontrolled clients whose emotions tend to be directed inward or suppressed. Standard DBT is designed for undercontrolled clients whose emotions tend to be directed outward and appear disruptive.
Primary focus
RO-DBT emphasizes social signaling and social connectedness. Standard DBT emphasizes emotion regulation, impulse control, and distress tolerance.
Therapeutic stance
RO-DBT is less directive and encourages independence of thought. Standard DBT uses more direct intervention, particularly around dangerous behaviors.
Mindfulness approach
RO-DBT encourages self-inquiry and healthy self-doubt. Standard DBT emphasizes non-judgmental awareness and intuitive knowing.
Core skill
RO-DBT prioritizes radical openness. Standard DBT prioritizes radical acceptance.
